Summer in the City

Luxembourg sparkles in summertime. No time of the year is better to explore the quaint, winding streets of Luxembourg City’s old town with its status as a Unesco World Heritage Site. It’s also a time for music, with squares, streets, and parks becoming concert venues featuring performances for all tastes: rock, hip-hop, classical, jazz and more. A thousand years of history combine with youthful energy and optimism at the “Schueberfouer”, the annual funfair bursting with rides and hearty food.

Luxembourg city has been buffeted by the tides of European history for more than 1000 years. This story is told by the Lëtzebuerg City Museum, with its recently remodelled permanent collection. It is 150 years since the nature of capital changed forever. The 1867 Treaty of London led to the closed, defensive city-fortress being demolished, allowing the emergence of the open, welcoming city we know today.

Lovers of culture and the natural environment will also find much to cherish. As well as the city being blessed with extensive parks and green spaces, there is the Natural History Museum with a renovated permanent collection explaining the diversity of local flora and fauna. Art, dance, and music are brought to life throughout the summer in the city’s squares, parks, streets, in the old town, by the vestiges of the old fortress, and in historic churches. Every few weeks, the capital is transformed into a major party and concert venue. From classical to rock, blues and jazz to hip-hop, the city reverberates with life and energy as all types of music are celebrated.

“Summer in the City” is a season-long open-air festival of culture. MeYouZik highlights world music on 15th July, then the day after, the multi-layered Luxembourg rock scene is highlighted at the 27th annual Rock um Kneudler. The Blues‘n Jazz Rallye on 29th July features more than 60 free concerts in the atmospheric streets and bars of the City’s valley districts Grund, Clausen and Pfaffenthal. Dip into some of the latest trends in local and international performance art with the Streeta(rt)animation festival in the upper-town’s shopping streets on 11-12 August. Laughter and amazement are guaranteed, with spectators becoming part of the show.

You can also enjoy classic movies in the open-air at various locations between 21 July and 17 August, including a week with a screen next the Grand Duke’s place. Art, music and performance are provided year round at the Neimënster cultural centre at the heart of the old town in the valley. These events also move into nearby atmospheric outdoor spaces during the summer.

The summer festivities are rounded off each year with the major “Schueberfouer” funfair. From 23rd August to 11th September, more than two million people will come to experience the sights, tastes, sounds, and sensations of 190 rides and stands from across Europe. This fair was founded in the year 1340 to take advantage of Luxembourg being at the crossroads of key commercial transport routes: a formula which works well to this day. This is one of the largest fairs in Europe, and the Schueberfouer mobile app will help you find your way around.
