Motorbike riders treated like royalty

Fuelled with a copious breakfast and with your leathers on, you are now set to discover Luxembourg's sights as well as the biker-friendly roads, restaurants and hotels. It is literally a formula fit for royalty. King of the Belgians Albert was known to have spent many happy hours touring the country on his motorbike.

Roads hug the banks of the Upper Sûre lake, cross the sweeping countryside of Luxembourg’s natural parks, and wind around medieval villages and castles. Exhilaration and discovery go hand-in-hand. There is so much to see in such a small area. From the valleys and plateaux of the Ardennes in the north, the gentle plains and hills of the central Guttland, the sunny slopes of the Moselle vineyards, and the contours of the historic open-cast mining sites in the southern Red Rocks Region, there is much to stir the head and heart.

Hills and valleys roll into the distance, offering the promise of winding roads through verdant countryside laced with streams and rivers, with church spires and bell-towers dotting ancient woodland. In total there are nearly 2,000 km of calm, empty roads that seem to be purpose-built for motorbiking pleasure. In particular, the hills around Burden and Eschdorf have attracted generations of bikers. You will feel free and at one with nature as you take the curves through the Guttland’s fields and pastures, and by the Moselle’s vineyards.

Organise your trip in no time with the specially designed map available from the Luxembourg Automobile Club’s online shop. The maps put Luxembourg in its international context, highlighting how the country is integrated with recognised cross-border European motorbike road trails. Also, the Motor Union Luxembourg has complied a guide featuring tips and suggestions from other bikers. This resource is designed to help individuals and groups get the most from their visit. Even though Luxembourg’s borders are not far apart, there are routes of up to 220km in length were you don’t leave the country. Sign up online for details.

Luxembourg is an open, welcoming country, with one of its great strengths being that nearly half the population come from abroad. This is reflected in hotels able to serve clients in several languages including English, Dutch, Portuguese and more, as well as native Luxembourgish, French and German. This diversity is reflected in the range of quality international cuisine. Life is made easier and more pleasant still with the Luxembourg Card tourist passport, which gives access to more than 70 attractions that can provide a focal point for your road trip.

Bikers are welcome in Luxembourg. Double crash barriers have been installed on many hairpin bends and tricky road sections are signposted. Many hotels offer services tailor-made for bikers, including drying rooms for clothes and garages to keep bikes safe. There are also plenty of convenient bike parking zones in urban areas, not least near Luxembourg City’s old town, which is recognised by Unesco as a World Heritage Site.
